Stephanie and Riley

Saturday July 13, 2013

I met Stephanie back in January 2012 at the Wonderful Wedding Show, little did I know at the time that I would be meeting such a wonderful couple.  Right from the start I could see the love and admiration that Riley and Stephanie shared for one another but they wouldn't be complete without their adorable dog, Brohc.  This has got to be one of the sweetest and loyal dog's around.  I can see why they even bought him his own bow tie to wear for the wedding day.
One thing I've always said, is how unique every wedding that I photograph is.  Whether it's the style of the dress, the location, or the inspired theme of the day.  Today was filled with pieces from the past and present of hand-made items to old heirlooms.  A photographer's dream!
I met Riley at his mother's beautiful home.  Honouring his Irish and Scottish heritage, Riley dressed in traditional Celtic garments and wore pieces that were inspired from his family crest.  His ring was banded with the Trinity Knot.  I have learned that the trinity knot, or Triquetra has many different meanings but they all symbolize a union of "three".  In the past it represented the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but in modern use it is believed to represent the three promises of a relationship to love, honour, and protect.

Another piece that Riley wore was a necklace given to him by his mother in loving memory of his father who passed away just a few years ago.
One thing that I didn't know about Riley was his gift of craftsmanship.  The ring box that he made to hold their wedding rings was remarkable.
Riley also made a Sgian Dubh (skean-dhu) which is a Scottish term for a small, single-edged knife or a  Scottish kilt knife worn as part of the traditional dress.
It is always special to me when a wedding theme is inspired by true events that happened within their own family history.  It brings emotion, heart, and love to every photograph.  Riley looked so handsome dressed proudly in his Scottish garments, just as Stephanie looked breathtaking as she stepped into her wedding gown.
Stephanie wore her mother's wedding veil along with an elegant tiara and set of pearls from each of her grandmothers.  The tiara was 55 years old and worn when her grandmother married in April 1958.  Stephanie has described herself to me as someone who would rather play hockey then wear a dress... I find that hard to believe as Stephanie looked exquisite in her vintage-styled gown and wearing the beautiful classic earrings that were a gift from Riley.

Stephanie and Riley were married in a beautiful ceremony in the courtyard of the historic, Lower Fort Garry where family and friends watched as they exchanged rings, laughs and tears as they shared their handwritten vows.

As the ceremony ended we captured family photos in the courtyard.  The sun was hot... the air was humid... but Stephanie and Riley never complained.  Instead they played with their nieces and nephews, joked with family, and laughed alongside their wedding party.   I'd like to thank this outstanding wedding party.  You were all a joy to work with.

Thank you Stephanie and Riley for inviting me to be a part of your wonderful wedding day.  I was inspired by your love of family and tradition, for the young and the old and the heirlooms we inherit because of it.   You are both such loving and caring people.  I can see the joy that you bring to your friends and family but also to one another along with love, laughter, and adventure!

Stephanie and Riley's reception was held at Rembrandt's Restaurant and Conference Centre.  The evening was filled with a delicious meal followed by wonderful speeches and games.  One of the best moments was watching Stephanie and Riley perform a unique choreographed first waltz.  Watch out dancing with the stars!
Congratulations!
